Childproofing: Making Your Home Safe For Your KidsChildproofing: Making Your Home Safe For Your Kids by Margaret Gaia Revamping your house for the safety of your kids does not mean putting everything away from closets to edgy tables and more. Your house does not need to suffer because of childproofing. Your home could be safe for kids without sacrificing its looks and aesthetics. As your kids start to roam around the house, they are more prone to bruises and injuries. And on this phase of their adventurous and curious mind, you have to practice childproofing. This is a totally time-consuming task because you have to check everything which can possibly hurt your kids. If the parents do not have enough time, they could seek the help of an expert in childproofing. But if you want to be really hands-on and do things with your partner, here are some of the common hazards at home which you have to address. Appliance. Television, ovens, stove, electric fans or air cons and other electrical devices are seriously perilous for kids especially if these are easy to reach. Your kids might get burned if they suddenly touched the ovens or stove at home. Also, your kids could insert their fingers inside electric fans which can totally harm them. Kids are always curious especially to things unfamiliar for them. On the other hand, to avoid hassles and danger brought by these appliances, keep them out of reach of children. You can also use knob covers for ovens and stove to prevent kids from opening it. Plus, always turn off your electric devices if not in use. But the best way to shun accidents is to always supervise your kids. Glassware. Glass plates, vases, and other decorative glass wares should be away from kids. Your kids might cut themselves if ever they accidentally broke it. So better keep those on stands unreachable for kids. Also, try to orient and explain to your kids that certain things at home should not be touched by them. By doing this, you do not only maintain your kids’ safety but also your house’ beauty. Tables and chairs. These things generally have sharp corners and edges but you cannot totally put it away. Instead, you can use table and chair cushions to lessen the sharpness and avoid accidents. There are some cushions or cloth just fit for the edges or corners of these home decors and furniture. Stairs. This is one of the most dangerous parts of your home where your kids might trip and fall. Bungalow houses normally do not have stairs but if your house has high stairs, since you cannot remove it, better install locks on it. Parents could put gates on top and bottom parts of the stairs to prevent kids from trudging there. Also, remove clutters especially toys from stairs which could catch the kids’ attention. Cabinets and drawers. These are also hazardous especially the locks and knobs. If the knobs are too low and very accessible for the kids, they might open it or bump into it. Parents should use knob covers especially to the kitchen drawers to avoid danger for the kids. Small gadgets. Nowadays, cell phones, iPods, USBs, and other gadgets are seen at home. Keep these things away from kids because they might bite or swallow it. The content and radiation from these gadgets are also not advisable for kids so always make sure that your gadgets are kept in a safe place. Kids should roam around the house freely and securely. Plants. You may discover that some plants can cause allergies and asthma to your beloved kids so think twice on which plant to keep inside. You can totally maintain green without sacrificing your children’s health. As the cliché goes, “prevention is better than cure,” better keep everything safe especially at home for your kids before you regret it. Though parents, mostly moms, want to maintain the aesthetics of the house, safety of the kids is still the top priority. |
