Week 17 of Pregnancy

Your Baby and Changes…

Your baby continues to grow at a rapid pace and he is about five inches by week 17 of pregnancy and weighs almost five ounces!  You will notice in week seventeen that your baby is mobile and seems to be moving all over the place inside your womb.  While you may not imagine holding your baby at this phase due to his aggressive movements in your womb, he would fit securely into the palm of your hand at this stage.

This is an interesting point of development for your baby because it is during week seventeen that the cartilage making up the skeleton in your baby's body is starting to transform into bone. At seventeen weeks time your baby should be hearing things as well.  Many moms will put the radio up next to their baby or have their husbands speak softly to the baby.  There are some studies suggesting that your baby responds to music and to the human voice even while in the womb.

Your Body and Changes…

By seventeen weeks your uterus should now be about one and one half to two inches below your bellybutton, so you should be showing a little in your lower abdomen.  At seventeen weeks pregnant your uterus begins to take on the shape of an egg shape instead of the round shape it has had during the early phases of your pregnancy.  Eventually your uterus will begin to inhabit most of your pelvis and abdomen.

At week seventeen it is safe to say that you are showing at least a little bit.  Your friends and family will probably be the first to notice that you are showing.  You are probably adding weight pretty consistently at this point; just know this is perfectly normal at this stage.  You are probably noticing more and more vaginal discharge at week seventeen as well.  The increased vaginal discharge is referred to as leucorrhoea.  This discharge is normal if it is odorless and a milky or clear in color. Part of the reason you produce more is your body's increased estrogen production and more blood flow in the genital area.  But be aware if your discharge comes with an itching or burning feeling.  It’s always best to tell your doctor if your discharge includes an itching or burning feeling.  Also, be aware if the discharge has a foul smell to it.
