Week 16 of Pregnancy

Your Baby and Changes…

It may be hard to fathom but by week 16 of pregnancy, your baby has grown to nearly four inches in length.  And your baby now weighs in at a staggering two and a half ounces, give or take a half of an ounce.  This is a week where your baby is growing at a rapid pace.  His muscles are growing stronger by the day.  And his as head and neck are beginning to grow straighter.  The body is finally starting to catch up with the head growth now.

It is in week sixteen that your baby's eyes are sensitive to light.  In fact, there have been many tests that have shown during week sixteen of pregnancy that if a light is held against a mom’s belly, the baby would gradually move its hands up to shield its eyes.  During week sixteen the baby's genitals are formed well enough now that it may be possible to tell the gender on ultrasound.  It is still very early to make this determination and it’s not uncommon to predict wrongly the sex of your baby.  Some other observations about your baby during week sixteen are that your baby's nails are well formed and some babies are even in need of having their nails trimmed at birth. Your baby is emptying his or her bladder every forty to forty five minutes.

Your Body and Changes…

You may start noticing your desire to urinate regularly is starting to slow down.  This can be explained very simply by the fact that your uterus is continuing to move upwards which will start to relieve the pressure on your bladder, and as a result, your need for frequent urination should be reduced.  But don’t be surprised if you trade the urination issue with issues with your bowels.  Women very commonly report that constipation is an issue during week sixteen and moving on.  The only suggestion you might want to take is to drink lots of water; this could ease some of the constipation issues.

It’s also very common at this stage for women to report that sleeping on your belly has become too uncomfortable.  It’s at this stage, week sixteen that you will need to start learning to sleep on your side.  Some women experience constipation during pregnancy and a change in bowel habits. Make sure that you drink lots and lots of water, as much as eight 8-ounce glasses a day and add extra fiber to your diet. Exercise also helps, so try going for a daily walk.
