Week 12 of Pregnancy

Your Baby and Changes…

In week 12 of pregnancy, your baby has grown to a substantial two and one half inches in length, weighing in at just over one half an ounces.   As you continue your pregnancy, growth and development become very rapid for your baby, and the baby’s brain will begin to product hormones.  The baby’s nerve cells in your baby’s brain will start producing at rapid speeds, and your baby miracle might even start sucking his thumb in the womb while swimming about in his open space.   By now your baby is producing urine and the kidneys are functional.

Your Body and Changes…

By week twelve your uterus is moving up and out just resting outside your pubic bone, and from this point, it will expand into your abdominal region, which in turn will begin your showing process at a rapid pace.  Your uterus will continue to expand throughout your full nine month term to provide a home for your baby at his growth pace.  A short time after childbirth, your uterus will reside in its normal home and return to its normal size, however during pregnancy, the uterus can account for two pounds of weight gain and actually weigh in at that amount.

Other changes that occur are a dark line down your stomach which is referred to as the linea nigra and more and more freckles become apparent throughout your body.  Keep in mind at this stage that the Mommy’s skin is much more sensitive, therefore a reduction in sunlight can be a very healthy step in the pregnancy.  If you choose to expose yourself to sun, it is a good idea to invest in a sun protection cream without toxins or chemicals that are harmful to your baby, as the skin can intake these toxins and absorb them directly to your baby.  Other symptoms which may occur in terms of changes to the body are the feeling of heartburn, as slowed digestion in combination with the pressure on the abdomen applied by the uterus expanding can be the direct cause of this experience.  It has been said that sleeping positions, such as sleeping with your head elevated, can eliminate the amount of stomach acid that reaches your throat at night, which in turn will help with frequent heartburn.  No matter the position of sleep, it is a good idea to avoid the laying position immediately after each meal, and to let food digest at least one hour after intake.
