Week 11 of Pregnancy

Your Baby and Changes…

By week 11 of pregnancy, your baby has become the size of a small puppy, being able to sit comfortably in your hand.  Your baby is roughly one and three fourths inches to two and one half inches in length and weighs about a half an ounce.  At this stage in development, the baby’s skin is apparent, yet will remain very thin.  Your baby is able to open and close his hands at this point, and blood vessels can be seen thru the tiny layer of thin skin he is using as a protective layer.  His mouth is developing more and his teeth line where teeth will one day reside is growing at this stage, while toes and fingers are beginning to separate.

Your Body and Changes…

While most observers will not be able to tell you are pregnant, you are able to see a little pooch in your stomach area which is a sign of your baby growing.  Morning sickness and the frequent bouts of fatigue are getting happening less and less, and you are now feeling a bit better with more energy.  Fingernails and toenails are growing quicker, as is your hair, and while some women don’t experience this until the third trimester, this is a sign of rapid growth spurts for your baby.  It is good!

As you enter into your second trimester, weight gain becomes more apparent and your need for significant calorie intake is more frequent.  At this stage, it is common for your physician to tell you a pound per week weight gain will be sufficient.  This is a result of the decrease in morning sickness, and you being able to keep your food inside and nurturing your baby.  Keeping your weight gain within the recommended amounts will help with comfort, the control of varicose vein development, and the discomfort around the uterus area.  Mild walks and stretching are both recommended at this stage for a healthy and most comfortable pregnancy.
