Your Baby and Changes…

During week four of pregnancy your baby is approximately .04 inches long and is very small.  That said, week to week your body and your baby will develop and become stronger and healthier daily.

Uterus provides a destination for your baby at this point in the pregnancy, which allows your little one to implant into the lining, and continue to develop.  At this stage, the baby resembles a small tadpole and the amniotic cavity begins to form, at which from this the placenta will grow and nourish over the course of your pregnancy.  The placenta plays a crucial process in nourishment and safety of your baby during pregnancy, and it is made up vascular networks which carry oxygen and nutrients to your baby.  The baby is now being referred to as an embryo and the organs of your baby are beginning to take shape.  It is of crucial importance from four weeks pregnant on that you do not expose your baby to harmful substances.  These substances can cause many birth defects, fetal malformations, and/or deformities.  Some common substances people tend to stay away from are alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse.  If you have problems in any of these areas consult with your physician, as between the two of you there may be an immediate solution to your problem which could save your baby’s life.

Your Body and Changes….

By four weeks you might see some changes in your body or the way you feel as a new Mommy, such as becoming more tired often with less energy throughout your daily routine.  Breast tenderness and cramping are also common, so don’t be alarmed, as your body is conducting a great process…creating a new life!

At this stage, if you desire, you can take a home pregnancy test which should be accurate in the result.  It is very important that you visit your physician regardless, as you will need to make frequent visits over the course of your pregnancy.  Unless you are in a high risk situation, your physician might suggest they wait to see you until eight to ten weeks pregnant.  If this occurs, it is common, and you should trust in your physician’s orders, however they might prescribe prenatal vitamins at this point to ensure you are taking a healthy approach to your pregnancy and with your body.
